Athletes have embraced the moisture-wicking properties of synthetic
T-shirts and other workout wear. But many athletes -- and those who
love them -- often discover an unpleasant feature of these microfiber
garments: They smell bad. Sales of synthetic "base layers," as retailers call long underwear
these days, have helped pump up sales of athletic apparel 11% to an
estimated $15.2 billion in 2007, far outpacing growth of apparel
overall, according to market-research company NPD Group. But few can
deny that these garments, in action, are like Petri dishes, incubating
odor-causing bacteria. And they often hold on to the bacteria through a
wash cycle, leaving some of it to bloom again, when the next workout
begins.

ATLANTA, Ga. – The United States Olympic Committee and WIN Products, Inc. have announced a new licensing agreement that makes WIN Detergent the Official Licensed Laundry Detergent of the U.S. Olympic Team. The partnership will introduce a new, sports-specific laundry detergent called “WIN,” the world’s first oxidized formula specifically designed to eliminate the embedded sweat and odors found in performance athletic apparel. It is the first official licensed detergent of the U.S. Olympic Team and is a product that will be used at the U.S. Olympic Training Centers nationwide.
For years, athletes have been using high-performance micofiber apparel which features moisture management and body heat mitigation. However, these products retain bacteria which is attracted to the sweat trapped in the microfibers that provide the performance benefits. The result is a musty odor that traditional detergents have not been able to remove.
